Nominate a Caregiver for the Caring Like Karen Award

Know an exceptional caregiver? The Caring Like Karen committee is now accepting nominations for its annual caregiver awards. Nominations will be received until midnight on Monday, May 2. Sponsored by the Community Foundation of West Chester/Liberty, the award was formed to honor the late Karen Mason, an exceptional caregiver who cared for West Chester resident Patti Alderson’s elderly mother until Mason was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Mason died of the disease in 2012. Six honorees will be selected this year from the following categories of caregivers: Hospital/Hospice, Nursing Home/Retirement Center, Homecare, Child, Physician and Family. Awards will be given at a June 11 luncheon. Find detailed information on luncheon tickets and event sponsorship or make nominations online. CaringLikeKaren.org

West Chester Chiropractic Center Welcomes & Celebrates Staff

West Chester Chiropractic Center has been a staple for quality chiropractic care in our community since 1989. Dr. Katherine Schneider, who has been with the practice for 7 years, was named one of Cincinnati’s Top Chiropractors in 2015. This fall, the team welcomed Michael Hekler, D.C., to the practice. Hekler knew from an early age that he wanted to become a doctor and help people live happier, healthier lives. After graduating from Miami University he felt that there had to be a better, more natural way to help patients without jumping straight to medications and surgeries. The more he learned about the natural, hands-on treatment with chiropractic care, the more he fell in love with it. Hekler is excited to spread the message of health and wellness to the West Chester and Liberty communities. Also new to the practice is Nancy Shelton, who has 13 years of experience as a Licensed Massage Therapist. WestChesterChiro.com

WTS Builds Bridges with
Lakota Students

In honor of Engineers Week, Women in Transportation Seminar (WTS) spoke to Edward Matlack’s Engineering classes at Lakota East High School on February 26. WTS is an international professional organization with a mission to promote the advancement of women in the transportation field. Seven WTS volunteers explored the field of engineering with the classes: what to expect if students were planning to attend college for engineering, salaries, the credential process and the different work environments for an engineer. Under the direction of the volunteers, the students worked together to build a beam bridge using straws, paper clips and masking tape and tested the bridge strength with glass beads. Next, they built a suspension bridge out of the same materials with added reinforcements of dental floss and tested the bridge load until failure. The presentation was organized by WTS member Sue Farver-Springer. More information about WTS and its support for engineering students is available online. WTSInternational.org
