January 2017 Around Town

Volunteer With Junior Achievement

Why do many students drop out of high school even though they have passing grades?  They simply don’t see the relevance of their school work to their future life success. Junior Achievement wants to change that. Make a difference in the lives of our area youth by being a Job Exploration Host. A simple commitment from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on either/both Tuesday, February 14 or Friday, March 3 can make all the difference! It gives Lakota eighth grade students a chance to see how the skills learned in school relate to the workplace. Contact Carol Lucio, Carol.Lucio@ja.org for more information. JA—Empower the Future! The Urology Group Provides Prostate Cancer Solutions

One in seven men receives a prostate cancer diagnosis at some point in his life. It’s the second-leading cause of cancer death among men.  Fortunately, when caught early, prostate cancer is highly treatable. The Urology group recently reached a milestone, treating more than 1,000 men in the greater Cincinnati area with the advanced technology of CyberKnife.

Despite its name, CyberKnife involves no cutting. The outpatient procedure, done at The Urology Group’s Norwood campus, delivers high doses of radiation with pinpoint accuracy, minimizing the impact on the rest of the body. Treatment takes just five sessions, compared to 40 or more for traditional radiation, which means fewer side effects and a faster recovery. Regardless of the diagnosis, The Urology Group’s physicians and staff remain focused on providing the best possible outcome. Nationally recognized for urologic care, The Urology Group has 12 offices throughout Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, including offices in West Chester, Hamilton and Middletown. UrologyGroup.com

Donut Trail Wins Sweet Award

The Butler County Visitors Bureau (BCVB) was recognized for superior excellence in destination marketing from the U.S. Travel Association by receiving the prestigious Destiny Award for Special Projects for creativity and execution of the Butler County Donut Trail. In September the BCVB was one of only 13 destination marketing organizations nationwide to receive recognition across 14 categories.

Recently the BCVB added a new geocaching feature to the Donut Trail. Geocaching is a worldwide, outdoor treasure hunting game that uses GPS-enabled devices such as mobile phones, and challenges players to navigate to specific coordinates in an attempt to find a hidden container (geocache). The GeoTour project is a natural extension to the popular Donut Trail, featuring an official GeoTour passport, 12 donut-themed stops throughout Butler County, and a commemorative Donut Trail GeoCoin earned upon completion.
