New Student Groups Support Veterans

Two new student groups at Lakota’s high schools have found ways to honor local veterans. At Lakota West, the group of 15 students sent hundreds of letters and care packages to active military, as well as gift cards to military families. In observance of Veteran’s Day, the group hosted a breakfast for veterans and their families at Texas Roadhouse, with entertainment by West choir singers. The West group is also planning to support a literacy program of the USO that provides a book to both the person on active duty and his/her child so they might read it together.

At Lakota East, the student group honored Veteran’s Day by inviting veterans and their families to parade down Main Street following a breakfast, video and program that featured performances by the East band and choir. At the school’s fall pep rally, the group presented the first-ever 22 Push-Up Challenge, inviting all student-athletes to do 22 push-ups in honor of the 22 veterans who, on average, commit suicide every day. Later in the year they’ll host  Lakota’s Military Commitment Ceremony. LakotaOnline.com

Lakota Student Becomes JDRF Youth Ambassador

Alli Chouteau, an eighth grader at Plains Junior, was selected as one of the 2018-2019 Youth Ambassadors for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) in 2016, Chouteau has successfully navigated this disease with the help of her family and friends she’s met through JDRF. The Youth Ambassador program was created to empower children with T1D by giving them the opportunity to provide diabetes education to the public while helping JDRF and the Southwest Ohio chapter raise diabetes awareness. Youth Ambassadors like Chouteau represent JDRF in public settings and help steward the mission. For Chouteau, the selection was an honor and she looks forward to raising awareness of the disease—hoping to one day find a cure. JDRF.org/swo
