Mother Teresa Students Make Community Impact
Months of hard work, research, sacrifice of lunch and study hall periods, and practicing presentation skills, culminated in the Magnified Giving finalist round at Liberty Township’s Mother Teresa Catholic Elementary School (MTCES) in April. This school year, MTCES established a partnership with Magnified Giving, a nonprofit organization in Cincinnati that exists to engage students in philanthropy.
Led by parent volunteers Avinne Kiser and Sheryl Harold, 50 junior high students participated in the MTCES Magnified Giving program. They voted to focus on the themes of hunger/poverty and disabilities/illness this year. After being randomly divided into 10 groups, students familiarized themselves with the nonprofits’ missions by volunteering and speaking with organization representatives about financial health, goals and needs. The project culminated with group persuasive slide presentations to their peers and various panels of judges about why their respective organizations should win a Magnified Giving $1,000 grant. The group presenting for 4 Paws for Ability won the $1,000 grant, however because the presentations were so persuasive, an audience member made an anonymous donation so several other organizations could receive grants as well. Liberty Township Unveils Inaugural Annual Report
Liberty Township proudly presented the inaugural 2018 Annual Report this spring. The report is designed to provide highlights and project updates from 2018, including community events, planning and zoning, economic development, parks and recreation and more. The report shows there are approximately 13,500 households in Liberty Township, with a growing population of more than 40,000.
In the year ahead, residents can expect to see progress with the new Administration/Police Substation building construction along SR 747. An update to the Comprehensive Plan 2020 will take place this year, which will require community input. The Township continues to evaluate walkability opportunities as well as progress on The Millikin Way Interchange project. Follow Liberty Township on Facebook for more updates. West and East Students Win Art, Writing and Science Awards
Many Lakota students ended the year on a high note. The 2019 Cincinnati Overture Art Awards honored several students, including: Alyson Power from West won the visual arts category and received a $4,000 scholarship; Trey Small from West was awarded a $1,000 finalist scholarship; and Ryan Kmieske from East was named a semifinalist in this category. Winners from the 2019 Ohio Governor’s Youth Juried Art Exhibition included Alyson Power, Trey Small and Maddy Zimmerer from West, and from East winners included Julia Haug, Mckenna Lewis, Jacob Wernke, Anastacia Hartinger and Alex Strack. Finally, several students won the 2019 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, including Trey Small, Alyson Power, Jeanna Sharkey, Luke Wilson and Kaylee Grayson.
Another student ended the school year with a major award. East senior Hannah Nguyen was one of the Amazon Future Engineer scholarship winners for her accomplishments in computer science. Hannah will receive $40,000 over four years for college. She will also participate in an internship with Amazon after completing her freshman year in college. Local Family Donates Gazebo
The Morris family donated a new gazebo that has been installed at Wetlands Park West, which borders SR 129 between LeSourdsville West Chester Road and Van Gorden Road. The donation included a new paint job and roof for the gazebo. Finishing touches will include a picnic table and wood chipped walkway. The Wetlands Park, established in 2000, features 42 acres of a bike trail, fishing, hiking trail, picnic area and more. Liberty-Township.com
