For many of us, August is a bittersweet turning point in the calendar year. Summer is drawing to a close, and the school bells will be ringing any day now. While the lazy days of sipping cool beverages poolside may be numbered, this month brings a sense of renewal. New routines, new clothes and new school supplies often come to mind in August.

Earlier this year, we dedicated issues to both the men and women of our community, so it would only be right to celebrate some of our cutest residents this month: kids and pets!

Inside, we meet local students who had amazing adventures this summer. From dancing on a cruise ship to rebuilding homes in Appalachia to competing for a national robotics title, read how some of our best and brightest in Lakota spent their summer. We also explore how teens are working to provide peer support as the Hope Squad kicks off their second year in Lakota schools.

If you’re a cat lover, we’ve found your favorite new coffee shop—the Kitty Brew Café. Learn how this nearby business finds new homes for local cats. In this issue, you’ll meet two area artists that use unique mediums to capture your pet’s true colors. We also whipped up a recipe for homemade dog treats on page xx so you can spoil your loyal companions.

Whether your house is filled with kids, pets or both, you’re sure to find a story this month that’s purrrfect for you.
