Lakota West Band Makes it to BOA Semi Final

For the first time in Lakota West Band history, the 2019 Lakota West Band made their debut in the Semi-Finals at the Bands of America Grand National Championship. The event was held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. They were among 38 bands chosen for the semi-finals with their show “Eccentricity.” The past two years have been excellent for Lakota bands, given that Lakota East Marching Band made their first appearance in the semi-finals of this same competition in 2018. Live the Dream – Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day event “Live the Dream: Our Declaration of Unity” will take place on January 20. This event combines the efforts of West Chester and Liberty Townships, Lakota Local Schools, and the MidPointe Library system. The day begins with a March for Unity, which starts at the clocktower at the Square @ Union Centre. The march will proceed to Lakota West High School. Inside the school, after the march, there will be a cultural expo with displays from many different cultures that also remind us what we all have in common. The program at 11:15 a.m. will include an announcement of the student essay contest winners and a performance by the intergenerational community choir. Finally, a free lunch will be served in the Lakota West cafeteria, donated by local restaurants, while the Lakota West jazz combo performs for those assembled. Join us for this day of celebration and remembrance.

Safety in January and Winterizing Your Car

There are several things you can do to stay safe throughout the winter months. These actions maximize your car’s ability to keep you and your family safe during a winter storm. First, put a “winter supply” box in your car. A quick list of items you should include are a flashlight, road flares, first-aid kit, a few blankets, change of warm clothes for the driver, pairs of gloves, radio, charged cellphone for 911 calls, bag of sand (for traction), extra ice scraper, bottled water and some high-energy snacks (like nuts or jerky).

Throughout the winter, be sure to frequently check your engine coolant and antifreeze levels. Also, check your tire pressure and tread depth. The simple test is the “Lincoln test” – insert a penny into your tire’s tread with the top of Lincoln’s head pointing inward toward the tire. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, you need to replace the tire before winter weather begins.

Don’t forget — always buckle up, drive sober and eliminate distractions. Information provided by the Safety Council of Southwestern Ohio.
